Profit over people. It is an attack on design and engineering, and fundamentally the latest example of how we are stifling creativity in this country. It's a bad design decision. ... Until it seeps through your consciousness deep enough, and you never ever use that combo again! Design is there to solve problems. That comes first. A designer's "creativity" aka in many cases, their ego, comes last. Yellow text on white (and vice versa) causes a problem instead of solving it. It is a terrible design decision, and definitely nothing to do with creativity. A designer's creativity is not threatened by a colour choice: it should be stimulated by it. I'm flabbergasted that one of the designers who reposted the post below should defend a colour choice that's demonstrably the wrong one, especially when a user is clearly telling them: "this design decision is hurting me". Tony's Chocolonely yellow wrapper reminds me of that time I got into a re-designed Ryanair plane for the first time, and felt my old cornea injury flare up immediately at the sight of all that vile yellow and white: positively painful. The interior of a Ryanair plane proudly sports, in fact, the perfect hue of what I call "vile yellow": designed to evoke discomfort and pain, just like their booking process, and the whole experience with them at large. I am not feeling inspired to eat that Milk Almond Honey Nougat chocolate bar, wrapped as it is in Vile Yellow. I'm with Kaye Moors all the way. Kinda selfishly glad about this post because it demonstrates that my colour and contrast workshop really is desperately needed.

Last week ASUS (who make laptops) presented Future Facility’s new artificial intelligence device called SUSA during London Design Week. Before you try to rush out and buy it, you can’t, because it’s a concept. We do these occasionally with companies, to allow us to materialise thoughts and articulate where we could go. The interest SUSA garnered took us all by surprise, so I thought I’d write a little bit about it. SUSA is an attempt to explore ideas around calm technology, by deliberately suppressing or dampening the ‘attention grabbing’ screen by making the device less visually stimulating — something that many young people are crying out for, as they feel addicted and burned out. You could say its the antithesis of the recently launched tri-fold Huawei Mate smartphone, that turns a 6.2” smartphone into a 10.2” display. To suppress a smartphone, SUSA does things a little differently. First, the whole device, including its screen, is made from Ceraluminum (pronounced sarah-luminum), a proprietary material developed by ASUS that combines the lightness of aluminium with the durability of ceramics. Ceraluminium is formed by Oxidising aluminium at very high temperatures. Unlike anodising which uses chemicals, heavy metals and pigmentation, Ceraluminium uses only natural minerals - the colours are formed purely by adjusting temperature and length of time it remains in the tank. The technique was first investigated by ASUS in 2019 and successfully put into production this year. The result is a very matt ceramic-like texture that is durable and does not attract fingerprints. Since it’s produced with no pigmentation it’s also classed as 100% pure aluminium for recycling. It seems the perfect material to express a reduced-stimulation device. The front side of SUSA has small perforations in that form a low-resolution touch screen. You can still take a high-resolution photos or make a video call, it’s just that you see it in a new type of programmed low-resolution. Text has also been set to match its perforations so that it becomes crisp and legible. SUSA is able to cope with a low resolution screen thanks to some clever AI integration that synthesises information into small digestible chunks. We also added in some basic games like snake, to capitalise on the perforations. The result is a simple device that avoids us being sucked in, giving us back some control of our time and our lives. Mitch Yang, Chief design officer of ASUS made the project possible by saying yes, yes and yes. Dezeen’s Max Fraser was also hugely supportive. Thank you to both.
